The Memory Keeper's Gift Guide: The Right Memory Book for Every Stage

Memory books from Nuts & Bolts Paper Co wrapped with a green velvet ribbon on a table in front of the Christmas Tree

Raise your hand if you've ever been given a candle as a gift.

Now keep it up if you remember who gave it to you.

Yeah. Me neither.

Candles are lovely. They're also the gift version of "thinking of you!!" scribbled in a card at a red light. This year, more shoppers say they want gifts that actually have some meaning and thought attached. Don't you?

That's where we come in. A good gift doesn't just get unwrapped. It gets filled in, flipped through, and pulled off the shelf 20 years later when someone says, "hey, remember when...?"

While not every memory book fits every person, I'm willing to bet we have one that fits everyone on your wish list. Because regardless of what stage of life you're in, you're making memories that deserved to be documented.

So here's my stage-by-stage guide to picking the right memory book for everyone on your wish list, plus a quick cheat sheet on what makes a memory book worth buying. (I have a degree in product development, so yes, I have opinions about paper.)

For the Mom-to-Be:
Growing You Pregnancy Journal

Pregnancy is nine months of big feelings, weird cravings and Googling things at 2 a.m. The Growing You Pregnancy Journal gives her a place to catch it all, from the first flutter to the hospital bag.

Best for: Expecting moms, whether it's baby number one or number four. (Baby number four deserves a book, too)

Pro tip: Give it early. The first trimester is full of memories nobody writes down because they're too busy napping.

For Baby's First Christmas:
Story of You Baby Book

Baby's first Christmas only happens once. The Story of You Baby Book holds the milestones, the firsts, and all the little things you swear you'll remember but absolutely won't.

Pair it with: Our new DIY Baby Handprint/Footprint Ornament Kit. It comes with a stamp pad, a glass frame ornament, one red and one green velvet ribbon (pick your favorite) and two pieces of cardstock, so baby's tiny handprint can hang on the tree every year after. Add baby's name to the cardstock for a little extra!

Best for: New parents and December baby showers.

Pro tip: Personalized items need production time, so order by Dec 4 to get it under the tree.

For the New Parents:
Newborn Handprint Kit, Now With a Frame

Those teeny hands and feet grow fast. Like, unfairly fast. Our mess-free DIY handprint and footprint kit captures them without the salt dough disaster, and now you can add a frame so it goes straight on the wall.

Best for: New parents, new grandparents, and anyone who tried salt dough once and said "never again."

For the Fur Baby:
DIY Paw Print Ornament Kit

Pets are family. Some of us would argue they're the favorite child. I won't name names.

The DIY Paw Print Kit has everything you need to turn one muddy paw into a keepsake: a stamp pad, and optional add-ons for a frame or a glass frame DIY ornament kit with one red and one green velvet ribbon and two pieces of cardstock. Add your pet's name for a little extra touch!

Best for: Dog moms, cat dads, and anyone who has bought their pet a stocking.

Pro tip: Do this after a long walk. A sleepy pup is a cooperative pup.

For the Kids:
Screen-Free Gifts They'll Love

Want a gift that doesn't need charging? Same. The 2026 analog trend has us going back to paper, pens, and screen-free fun (thank goodness). Here's some of our favorite gifts for kids that follow the trend:

  • Kids Story Book: A screen-free story they can create and will want to read again and again.
  • Kid's Art Book: Finally, a home for all 400 of their drawings. Instead of searching for scrap paper, let them draw in here. When it's full, you have an instant keepsake!
  • Kid's Homework Planner: A stocking stuffer that sets them up for a fresh start in January.

For the Grandparents
Who "Don't Need Anything"

Grandparents always say they don't need anything. They're right. But they'll want this.

Coming Nov 13: Our new grandparents collection puts your kid's actual words or drawings on a mug, tea towel or golf towel. Grandpa's golf buddies are about to hear all about it.

For the Homeowner or DIY Spouse:
Personalized Home Project Planner

For the person who is always "just running to the hardware store real quick." The Personalized Home Project Planner keeps their projects, ideas and to-do lists in one place instead of scattered across the junk drawer.

Best for: New homeowners, DIY spouses, and anyone with a Pinterest board called "Someday."

Bonus: It's a much better gift than another flannel.

For the Whole Family:
Christmas Memories Journal

Christmas Memories Scrapbook and Journal Keepsake Book open on a table in front of the christmas tree

If you buy one thing for your own family this year, make it this one. The Christmas Memories Journal holds a little bit of every Christmas: who came, what you ate, what the kids asked Santa for, and the moments that made you laugh until you cried.

Fill it in every year, and in a decade you'll have the best book on your shelf.

Need tradition ideas to fill it with? Read our list of 25 holiday traditions to start with your kids.

Cheat Sheet: What Makes a Good Memory Book

Before you buy any memory book (even one that isn't mine), check for these:

  • Paper that holds up. Thick, acid-free pages won't yellow over time or let ink bleed through.
  • Prompts that do the thinking. Good prompts make it easy to start writing, even when you're exhausted.
  • Room to be messy. Look for space for photos, notes and the occasional spill.
  • Binding that lays flat. It's so much easier to write in a book that isn't fighting you.
  • A size that fits real life. A book that's too big or complicated ends up blank in a drawer. Pick one you'll actually finish.
